PROGRAMS

The Atlanta Lesbian Health Initiative is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of lesbians and other members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer community through education, advocacy, support and access to care.

Founded in 1996, we are still the only non-profit agency in the southeast solely devoted to lesbians, their partners and their families. Since that time, our focus has expanded from cancer support to include prevention education and to encourage all lesbians-and other members of our community-to lead healthier lives.

Our programs offer a wide array of services and resources:

  • Online Health Assessment We are proud to be the first organization of our kind to launch a new online health assessment, called the Lifestyle Link, where users can get a customized report with suggestions on how to develop and maintain a health lifestyle. Using their report, they can access our Health Resource Center for information and referrals for resources in the areas where they work and live.

  • Fourth Tuesday The Health Initiative has formed an alliance with Fourth Tuesday, Atlanta’s 25 year-old lesbian network, has revived its tradition of social networking dinners on the 4th Tuesday of every month. We also offer Happy Hours on the second Friday of every month. Social connections are essential for maintaining good mental health. We hope you will join us at one or more of these events..

  • Lesbian Health Fund The Health Initiative’s Lesbian Health Fund, established in 2007, provides access to valuable health screenings for under and un-insured lesbians.

  • Support Groups Providing support for women diagnosed with cancer and other illnesses is at our core. We also offer support for women concerned with elder care, weight loss, and more. Learn more...

  • Domestic violence survivors group - a safe place for survivors to work toward recovery from their situations. If you or someone you know has an immediate need for shelter from domestic violence, call the Georgia Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-33-HAVEN (1-800-334-2836). Once safety has been established, the Health Initiative’s survivors group can provide support and information. Contact the Health Initiative for details.

  • The ALHI Domestic Violence Program also works with batterers. Our state certified batterer intervention program assists lesbian batterers to make changes in the way they relate to their partners, and work toward breaking the cycle of violence. Contact the Health Initiative for details

  • Carpe Boobem Our signature program, Carpe Boobem, has educated more than 5,000 women on breast health care, including self-examination, clinical breast exams and mammograms.
