Reduce Your Risk for Breast Cancer through Exercise

A growing stack of research finds that activity really does protect against breast cancer. The encouraging details:

  • Among 567 women, exercisers were 35 percent less likely than non-exercisers to develop breast carcinoma in situ (BCIS), a precancerous condition, University of Southern California researchers say.
  • A Yale study of 570 women found that those who exercised the most had the lowest amounts of dense breast tissue. (Dense tissue could be a risk factor for cancer because it may contain more actively growing glandular tissue.)
The best news is that you don’t have to become a marathon runner or a body builder to protect yourself.  Work out for at least 30 minutes five times a week at an intensity that causes a light sweat. The goal is to become and remain physically active throughout your life.  Research has shown that physically active women who also maintain a healthy weight can reduce their risk of developing breast cancer by more than 30 percent.

See into the future

Go to Your Disease Risk to assess your chance of developing 12 types of cancer, including ovarian, breast, and colon. After the interactive tool estimates your risk, you'll get personalized tips for prevention.

Join us in the Race for the Cure

There’s still time to sign up to participate in the Komen Atlanta Race for the Cure on Saturday, May 13.  The 5K route winds through Atlantic Station.  Additional plans for race day also include a jazzercise aerobic warm-up, one-mile walk through the shops and parks in Atlantic Station and an awards and breast cancer survivor recognition ceremony.  If you’d like to walk with the Health Initiative team, email us at info@thehealthinitiative.org.

Shout Out!

We send a big Shout Out to Andrea Fox and the team at EPIC IT for hosting the Health Initiative’s table at the 2006 HRC Dinner.  Tickets are still available for the dinner, to be held Saturday, May 13.  Click here for more info or visit www.hrc.org, and click on Georgia under Your Community tab.

Another Shout Out goes to Frenesa Hall and the members of the WALK Band, who hosted and entertained a crowd at a Health Initiative House Party this past Sunday.  If you can, go hear WALK yourself at the Red Light Café on April 21st at 7:30. Frenesa, a Health Initiative Board member, asked us to thank the following for their support, as well:
