CULTURAL COMPETENCY TRAINING

As a healthcare professional, your interaction with each LGTB individual in your care makes a tremendous impact on the amount and accuracy of information shared with you.

From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS):

"Lesbians face unique challenges within the health care system that can cause poorer mental and physical health. Many doctors, nurses, and other health care providers have not had sufficient training to understand the specific health experiences of lesbians, or that women who are lesbians, like heterosexual women, can be healthy normal females."

The Health Initiative offers year-round trainings for health care providers and their staffs. Our trainings include information on the latest health research, the particular health needs and risks of our community, and strategies for providing competent care for LGBT populations. Health Initiative trainings, which have been offered from university classrooms to county and state-level government, can offer broad overviews of LGBT health or targeted educational tools on specific topics. Contact us if you are interested in having the Health Initiative visit your organization.

Another important service soon to be offered at the Health Initiative is Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Our clinician trainings will offer providers the opportunity to gain CEUs necessary for licensure while strengthening their skills and knowledge about LGBT health and the needs of LGBT patients.
